Family Fitness - Solutions for a Healthy Household

 

Spring is just around the corner and it is time to start preparing for simple outdoor fun that will get your family moving. Getting physically active as a family can help lower everyone's health risks and can improve cardiovascular fitness and strengthen muscles. An equally important benefit to enjoying your physical health is enjoying the emotional health of your family.  Use these simple outdoor activities as an opportunity to reconnect with one another.  Families of all ages can do the following activities, which don't require much special equipment or training:

 

  • Take a walk. Children can lead the way on a scooter or skates (be sure to have them ready with the appropriate safety gear).
  • Ride bikes. Cycling works your heart and leg muscles as well as improves your flexibility and balance.  Be sure that all riders wear the appropriate safety gear.
  • Exercise for charity. Participate as a family in community fitness events, such as charity walks.
  • Plan energetic outings. Instead of opting for a movie go play miniature golf.
  • Play games.  There is no need to spend a lot of money to have family fun and fitness. Consider playing tag, soccer or volleyball. Simply kicking, throwing or catching a ball improves coordination, strength and balance.

 

Plan now to get active with your family.  Find out what other fun activities your kids like to do and get involved.  Being active will help African American  families  build strength, stay healthy and create lasting memories.
